National Identity Card: Bahia to start scheduling for issuing document that replaces ID card this Tuesday

Appointments will be made on the state government's website or app for the SAC Pituaçu and Salvador Shopping centers in the capital of Bahia.

Bahia was among the last three Brazilian states to issue the new National Identity Card (CIN). The deadline for states to start issuing the document was January 11. At the time, the Pedro Mello Identification Institute, responsible for the activity in Bahia, said that the state would only be able to carry out the service from May 31.

In a statement, the DPT explained that the extension was due to a delay in the integration process of the QR Code generation system for the new National Identity Card (CIN), which is operated by the Ministry of Justice.

The Ministry of Justice was contacted by g1 and did not respond to questions.

The other two states that have also delayed issuing the new CIN are Roraima and Amapá. In response to g1, the Roraima government said that "factors in the federal administrative sphere are slowing down the start of this process". Amapá had not responded by the time this report was last updated.

Is the new CNI compulsory?

Yes, the old ID card has not yet expired, but it will only be accepted until February 28, 2032.

What changes with the new identity?

The National Identity Card follows the provisions of Law No. 14,534/2023, sanctioned by President Lula, which determines the CPF as the unique and sufficient number for identifying citizens in public service databases.

Previously, each citizen could have up to 27 different IDs, one per state. With the implementation of the new identity, Brazilians will now only use the CPF as their identification number.

What is the reason for unifying ID and CPF?

With the new identity, there is less chance of fraud, since previously it was possible for the same person to have an ID number for each state, in addition to the CPF. With the CIN, citizens only have one identification number.

The new wallet also features a QR Code, which allows you to check the authenticity of the document and find out if it has been stolen or lost, using any smartphone. It also has an international standard code called MRZ, the same used in passports.

Where is the new document issued?

To be issued, the population must go to the Public Security Secretariat of the state where they wish to be served.

What documents are required to issue the new ID?

To obtain the new ID, the applicant must present their birth or marriage certificate in physical or digital format. The document will be issued on security paper or on a polycarbonate (plastic) card, as well as in digital format.

How much does the new identity cost?

The first copy of the CIN and renewals, both on paper and in digital format via the GOV.BR app, are free, in accordance with Law 7.116/83. The second copy, however, is paid for and the fee varies from state to state.

In addition, if the citizen wants the polycarbonate (plastic) option, there will be a charge from the issuing state.
