How Brazilian technology will guarantee security and agility for almost 160 million voters in 2024

Griaule provides biometric recognition services to the TSE, prevents fraud in the issuing of voter registration cards and allows access to various online services

Biometric voter registration - based on the collection of fingerprints from all fingers, signature and photo - is a technological advance at the service of democracy, reducing fraud and increasing the credibility of elections. Biometrics makes the electoral process more secure by preventing one person from having several electoral titles and being able to vote in place of another, as well as allowing access to various online services, such as justifying absence via cell phone and issuing a duplicate title.

Since 2014, Griaule has been at the forefront of supplying and processing biometrics for the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) and, through its technology, has given more credibility to the Brazilian electoral process. Based in Campinas, Griaule is a Brazilian company specializing in biometrics that supplies cutting-edge technology to more than 70 countries, including the United States.

Among the benefits of biometric recognition for the next Brazilian elections is the prevention of fraud, since the system identifies people who have registered more than once and thus avoids duplicates. In practice, after biometric collection, Griaule's technology compares voters' fingerprints and photos, one by one, with all the others stored in a database to guarantee biometric uniqueness.

The technology provides the solution that ensures security for Brazilian democracy, guaranteeing uniqueness, i.e. that the identification - whether via document, photo or fingerprint - belongs to just one person. The process is carried out by comparing the biometrics of those requesting the document with the gigantic database of the entire population eligible to vote in the country, which corresponds to almost 160 million inhabitants.Thiago Ribeiro, Business Director at Griaule.

After biometric validation in the e-Título application, voters have access to various services, such as justifying absence via cell phone, checking their electoral status and polling station, as well as a duplicate of their voter registration card. To find out if your biometrics are registered, simply access e-Título in the "consult electoral situation" tab.

The number of voters eligible to vote in the next election is 158.9 million people, 131.4 million of whom have been biometrically registered, or 82.7% of the total. The North is the region with the highest biometric registration of its population, with 93.2%, followed by the Northeast, with 91.9%, and the Midwest, with 89.8%. The South (87.8%) and Southeast (72.4%) have lower percentages.

As far as the states are concerned, Piauí has the largest biometric population in the country, with 94.8% of the total, followed by Paraíba (94.7%) and Rondônia (94.7%). The states with the lowest percentage of the population with biometrics for the next election are Espírito Santo (58.1%), Minas Gerais (64.9%) and Rio de Janeiro (67.6%).

Since 2008, the Superior Electoral Court has been collecting fingerprints and facial features to biometrically identify voters, but it was in 2014, with Griaule's technology, that voter biometrics began to be used to increase security. Griaule's biometric system, known by the acronym ABIS(Automated Biometric Identification System), relies on artificial intelligence and algorithms that process information in milliseconds during the quality check and comparison of biometric collections.

Biometrics collection is a free service that can be carried out at the municipality's electoral office - you just need to schedule it on the website of each state's Regional Electoral Court. The deadline for biometric registration for the next election was May 8, but anyone without biometric registration can vote normally with a photo ID.
