Griaule 's digitized biometrics system has just been recognized as a Strategic Defense Product (SDP) by the Ministry of Defense. Griaule, which specializes in biometric recognition technologies, has also been awarded the Strategic Defence Company (SDC) label. These titles indicate that a company, system or service is accredited by the Ministry of Defense for its importance to national security activities. The recognition - for both the company and the product - was published on June 11 in the Federal Official Gazette.
Developed in Brazil by Griaule, which was incubated at Unicamp and is based in Campinas, the Griaule Biometric Suite (GBS) is an integrated software solution designed to manage large-scale biometric and identity databases. Widely used by governments in national or state identification projects, such as elections, issuing IDs and criminal investigations, the GBS enables the collection of biometrics, their storage and database management - and guarantees that a person's ID is unique in the database, which attests to uniqueness.
"The Griaule Biometric Suite (GBS) has all the components developed nationally, eliminating dependence on external suppliers. Our solutions keep pace with advances in artificial intelligence, keeping the solution always up to date and ahead of technological innovations. In addition, it is compatible with any model of hardware, server and biometric collection devices, ensuring flexibility and ease of integration," says Thiago Ribeiro, Griaule's business director.
The system works by comparing fingerprints and biometric face scans, one by one, against all the other biometrics stored in the database. The GBS was used by the Pentagon, the US Department of Defense, to support intelligence operations in the anti-terrorism program in Afghanistan and Iraq. In this example, Griaule's biometric registration system registered 80 million people and criminal identification through forensics of fingerprint fragments found on bombs at crime scenes.
By guaranteeing accurate identification of a person within a few seconds, the biometric system can be used by the Ministry of Defense to support military and defense operations to improve the security and effectiveness of their operations. The system can be used to identify and monitor combatants, civilians and potential threats. Griaule's technology enables facial recognition in real time.
"Our technology quickly verifies the identity of individuals - whether via facial recognition, fingerprint or iris. When integrated with a security database, the biometric recognition system helps defense forces identify suspects and monitor suspicious or illegal activities with precision. In a practical way, it can monitor the country's border zones and also ensure that only authorized people access critical areas," says Ribeiro.
Griaule's biometric recognition technologies have more than 30 international certifications and awards, including from NIST and the FBI, ensuring the highest level of security and reliability. In the last 12 months, the company has collected digitized biometrics for the issuance of millions of National Identity Cards. And since 2014, Griaule has been in charge of supplying and processing biometrics for the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), with one of the world's largest databases of almost 160 million people.
